Season 2018/2019
The enduring relevance of opera today attests to its capacity for telling universally sweeping and timeless truths about the human condition. The Opera de Montreal’s 2018/19 season features The Champion, Carmen, Das Rheingold and Rigoletto. The challenge faced by Francophone writer, Carle Coppens, was to condense each story into an aphoristic trailer to intrigue contemporary audiences while pin-pointing the tragic themes embedded in the works. My challenge in writing and adapting the English lines was to accomplish the same thing without straying too far from the choices made in French. The project as a whole attests to the ability the pieces have to transcend time, language and culture.
